PRICELESS DREAMS EIGHT (8).

History was Leticia’s favourite subject. She was so passionate about it but after she saw the picture of Frank with the scandalous caption that came with it, she totally lost the history professor. She convinced herself that it was one of the pranks they played on each other. She checked her calendar and she realized that it was several months after 1st April so it could not be an April Fool’s Day prank. Many thoughts and scenarios flooded her mind. “This can’t be possible”, she wondered.”Frank and Rejoice?” she thought to herself, “they are worlds apart”. “I remember Frank jokingly made reference to her body and said he felt intimidated by her because of her curves”. “Did he mean it in a desirous way?” “Was it this same desire that would cause him to want to sleep with her behind my back?”. “They say men are like dogs and would want to bed any woman so I won’t be surprised if Frank actually is part of something like this, after all, all men are the same”. “What made me even think that Frank was going to be any different?”. Leticia sat there totally confused. “Maybe I am jumping the gun”, she thought to herself. “Women can be as sly as snakes and they will do anything to trap a man they want and I know Rejoice is very capable of such a thing”, Leticia added. “Come to think of it, my Frankie will never visit my hostel without calling me first to check with me”. She wanted to get back to the hostel to clear all the doubt that had flooded her mind. It was against the policy of the history professor for anyone to walk out of his class without his permission. Before the semester began, he spelt out clearly that, it would only be upon the death of one’s parents that he would allow any student leave the class to attend to the emergency but aside that case, no one could go to him with any other excuse so Leticia had to wait for the lecture to be officially over before she could move out. It was approximately forty-eight minutes more left for the class to be over. Leticia kept checking her watch probably after every five minutes but it seemed the more she checked, the slower the hands of time moved. Those forty-eight minutes appeared to be somewhat like hours to Leticia. Finally, the lecturer closed the class and Leticia sped off to her hostel. On her way, she went through her WhatsApp chats and updated herself on the issue at hand. She knew where to find Frank. Back at the hostel, Rejoice was surrounded by some other female friends. She appeared visibly shaken by her “ordeal”. “I didn’t intend to blow this out of proportion like this”, she thought to herself as the other ladies sympathized with her. “My plan was just to scare him a little, now see what I have caused?”. “How am I going to undo what has already been done?” “I cannot go back on my words but I must try to salvage what I can to make this prank-turned-rape saga go away”, she added. “Frank is going to kill me”. She went downstairs and asked to speak to the administrator. She told the administrator that she had been already humiliated by Frank’s action and the fact that he had been caught would serve as a bitter lesson to him so she pleaded that the case be discontinued. The administrator agreed and decided to release Frank. Immediately Frank stepped out, he met Leticia. “Seeing you here alone confirms that the rumours are true”, Leticia said.”Frank, how could you do this to me?”, she asked. “All this while that we’ve been together, you have never asked to sleep with me and I really respect you for that but even if you really wanted to have sex, it should have been anyone else but Rejoice”, she added. “I am hurt and I am disappointed in you, Frank”. As she spoke, Frank did not utter a word and was just  anxious for her to finish so that he could counter her submission. “Of all my detractors”, Frank started, “I didn’t count you as one of them”. “Just check your phone and check our chats to see what is there and see who is telling the actual truth”. As Leticia brought her phone out to check, Frank snatched the phone from her hand and started going through it. He spoke as he carried out this action. “You sent me a message this morning inviting me to…”, “this cannot be possible”, Frank started off, “baby, have you deleted any of our chats?”, a bewildered Frank asked Leticia. “I have lost my phone through this unfortunate situation but I would prove to you that all this is one big, fat lie”. Leticia looked at him with pity in her eyes and said, “Frank, please stop humiliating yourself more than you already have. Just go to your hostel and stay there”. “I don’t want to see you again”. “As it stands now, I am going to be the laughing stock of the hostel for the rest of my days here”. “The humiliation ends here and now”. Frank was lost for words, he did not know how to defend himself without any evidence. He begged Leticia but she walked out on him. She went into her room and apologised to Rejoice for Frank’s ‘inhuman behaviour’. After that, she cried for days. Weeks had passed and Leticia had refused to pick up Frank’s call or see him even though she had missed him so much. Rejoice found a way to bond with Leticia but wanted to apologise to Frank also. Frank had closed from an evening anatomy class and was preparing rice when he heard a knock on his door. He opened the door and the words that came from his mouth were, “you are the last person on earth I expect to see within a hundred meter radius from me so what do you want now, Rejoice?” “You even have the effrontery to knock on my door without shame”. She forced her way into Frank’s room and knelt down to apologise, “Frank please forgive me for putting you through such a trial”. “I cannot continue to live with myself knowing full well that I owe you this apology”, she added. “I would do anything to patch up for this act of mine but please forgive me”. “Even if I forgive you, it is not going to bring Leticia back into my life”, Frank said. “I have lost her forever”. “Do you know  how that makes me feel?”, Frank asked. “Just leave before I change my mind and strangle you here and now”. Rejoice got up to leave and Frank, like the gentleman he was, held the door wide open for her. In a few minutes, there was another heavy knock on the door. Frank got alarmed and opened the door with caution. “What are you still doing here, Rejoice?”, Frank yelled out. Rejoice pushed him aside, entered the room and quickly shut the door behind her. “I think Leticia is coming here to see you”…

PRICELESS DREAMS NINE (9)

“What did you just say?”, Frank asked as if he didn’t hear Rejoice the first time. “I said Leticia is coming here, duh”, Rejoice said. Frank was totally confused and kept turning in circles. “Is it that trouble knows you by name or something?”. “Everywhere your name is mentioned, the only thing that comes in it’s wake is trouble”, Frank said. “Wait a minute, you knew she was coming here and you deliberately came here with a flimsy excuse of coming to apologise for that fiasco and then end up here just when she is coming to make the untrue appear true and to destroy my chances of ever getting back with Leticia”. Frank added. “That is so not true”, Rejoice cut in. Before she could rebut Frank’s accusation, he held her neck and pushed her against the door, “now you, listen to me”. “I am going to get Leticia back, do you understand?” “I don’t expect you or anyone else to stand in my way”. “I wish I could just throw you over my balcony but that would be more scandalous”,Frank added. “I am going to tell you what we are going to do”. “I am going to go out there to meet her, go unto my balcony, and hide yourself behind the fridge, there is a blind for changing there, fix it in such a way that it is going to make you appear invisible”. “Do you understand?” “Should anything go wrong, I am going to ensure that I kill you, try me, young lady, try me”, Frank warned. He pushed her aside and showed her where the balcony was. He kept his composure and started opening the door, before he stepped out, he turned and shouted after her, “even if you so much as breathe too heavily, you would be in trouble”. “Funny how your game plan has blown up in your face right?” Frank then stepped out and closed the door behind him. He hurried to the porter’s cabin and bought some sardines and he heard his name as he took his change. He turned and acted so surprised, “Wow, Leticia, what a pleasant surprise”. “How are you?” “I’ve missed you to pieces”. “I am fine”, Leticia responded. They walked down the hallway towards Frank’s room. As they got to the door, Frank held the door knob and turned to look at Leticia. “What is it?”,Leticia asked. “Nothing, I just missed that pretty face and awesome smile”, Frank flattered. “Your flattery doesn’t tickle me one bit”, Leticia said coldly. “Just open the door”. Frank opened the door and they stepped in. Leticia said her purpose for coming there was to return a blazer she took from Frank one cold night. She started walking towards the balcony’s door to drop it in the laundry basket Frank kept there. As she opened the door, Frank called out her name, “Leticia, I love you”. She shook her head and went unto the balcony. She immediately screamed from the balcony, “Frank, what is this? Frank’s heart missed a beat and he asked, “what is what?”. He quickly rushed to the balcony. Leticia pointed to him a bunch of dirty dishes it seemed he had left unwashed. “Please I am sorry, I will clear it immediately”, Frank said as he realized it was not about Rejoice. He placed the blind properly and started collecting the dishes. He asked permission to wash them later and Leticia agreed. They both stepped back into the room and Frank used it as an opportunity to win her love back. It seemed the more he tried to defend himself, the angrier Leticia got. “You know what hurts me most are lies so please just tell me the truth”, Leticia said. “I have been telling you the truth ever since this issue started”, Frank begged. After all his pleas had fallen on deaf ears, Leticia said,”I want to take my leave Frank”. “Okay”, Frank agreed without arguing. As Leticia got to the door, she turned and suddenly hugged Frank, “I miss you so much Frank, I just had to find a way of coming to see you so I searched through my stuff and found the blazer so I quickly decided to come and visit you”. She kissed Frank and before they could realize, they were all over each other. Frank pushed her unto his bed and lay on top of her. She pushed him aside and said, “prove to me that you really miss me and want to spend the rest of your life with me”. “You know I would do anything for you”, Frank said, as he unbuttoned his shirt forgetting that Rejoice was still on the balcony. “I am not asking you to go down on me yet my dear”. “You should be able to wait till we are legally married to have me”, that is what I mean”. “Wear your shirt and accompany me to the roadside”. “Tish, why?”, Frank asked almost wanting to cry. “I hear you”. “Let us go”, Frank said, hiding his disappointment. They stepped out and Leticia left for her hostel. Frank went back into the room and went to his balcony. He parted the blind but to his surprise, Rejoice was not behind it. He looked over the balcony to see if she had accidentally fallen over but she was not there. He got alarmed and came back into the room and called out Rejoice’s name. “Rejoice, are you here?” He heard a squeak and soon, Rejoice came out from under the bed. Frank burst out into uncontrollable laughter. “You see where wrong desire can end a person?”, Frank asked her. She was so ashamed as she explained, “there was so much heat coming out from behind the fridge so I figured the bed would be a better hiding spot”. “That was smart on your part anyway”, Frank teased. Frank bade her farewell and asked her to leave. Soon Leticia and Frank were back together. They stayed together till they both completed school. Rejoice was never bold enough to come clean with Leticia. This created a big dent in their friendship after school. Frank worked in a hospital and Leticia worked as a lawyer’s secretary. It was the period she met Gabriel, a young lawyer who had just been employed by her boss…..
